What do you do as a machine and plant operator? 

Today, machines do most of the work and are indispensable. With a dual apprenticeship as a machine and plant operator, this also applies to you. After all, someone has to supervise the machines at work and intervene in the event of problems. That’s where you come in. You know the machines at your workplace like the back of your hand. After all, you set them up and put them into operation. That’s why you also know what to look out for to recognise whether all functions are working correctly. You also replace defective hoses, seals and other components. And you will be responsible for retrofitting or modernising the system. You control the machines and therefore production. You are in control.

Where are you needed?

Machines are used in all industries. Many doors are open to you with a dual apprenticeship as a machine and plant operator and you can follow your interests. Metal technology, food industry or would you prefer plastics technology? As a machine and plant operator, you have a wide range of career paths to choose from.  You can therefore already specialise during your training. Depending on the company, you can specialise in metal and plastics technology, textile technology, textile finishing, food technology or print and paper processing.

What should you bring with you? 

In addition to at least a secondary school leaving certificate, technical interest and manual skills are particularly important for a dual apprenticeship as a machine and plant operator. You also need good observation skills. This means that you are not easily distracted, but can concentrate well so that you don’t miss anything.

Your apprenticeship at a glance

  • 2 years
  • Theory at vocational school, practice at the training company
  • Training content: You will learn various production techniques and how to set up and operate production systems. You will also learn how to select and apply test procedures.
  • If you would like to continue after your apprenticeship, you have the option of extending the training period from 2 to 3.5 years. During the additional time, you can train in machining or production mechanics, for example. But even if you start your career straight away, there are promising opportunities for you. For example, with further training to become an industrial foreman specialising in metal. You also have the opportunity to become a state-certified technician and then take on management tasks
